Coffee machines are one of the few kitchen categories where November discounts are largely real. They are also a category where the headline percentage is calculated against a number almost nobody paid in October. Both things are true at once, and the difference between them is a price you wrote down three weeks earlier.

What actually drops

• Bean-to-cup machines, hardest of all. They carry the biggest margins, they are the category retailers use to pull people in, and the mid-range models are frequently the loss leaders of the week.
• Last year’s model, once the replacement is announced. This is the honest bargain of November: the same machine, a different model code, and often the only genuine change is the colour of the drip tray. Our reviews say when that is the case.
• Pod machines, aggressively — but read the small print. The machine is cheap because the capsules are not, and a two-year capsule habit costs more than the machine did.
• Entry-level pump espresso, in bundles. A machine plus a grinder plus a tamper often does drop as a set. Whether the grinder in the bundle is one you would have chosen is a separate question, and usually the answer is no.

What never really moves

• Good grinders. Burr sets from the makers who specialise in them hold their price through November because they sell all year without help.
• Prosumer espresso machines. Small importers with thin margins have nothing to discount; a large drop on one usually means a discontinued model or a grey import with no UK warranty route.
• Consumables. Descaler, filters and cleaning tablets are the same price in November as in June, and the multipacks that appear for the week are frequently worse value per unit than the standard box.

Four traps worth checking before you pay

• The inflated was-price. The anchor is normally the RRP, not the street price. Note what your candidates actually cost in early November and judge Friday against that.
• The quiet downgrade. Makers ship near-identical model codes to different retailers: same body, plastic portafilter instead of metal, or a pressurised basket where the reviewed model had a standard one. Check the full code, not the family name.
• The bundle that subtracts. A machine sold with a branded milk jug and a bag of stale beans is not a better deal than the machine alone. Price the parts separately.
• The seller you have never heard of. On a marketplace, the listing and the seller are different things. Check who ships it and who honours the warranty — on an appliance with a pump and a boiler, that matters more than on almost anything else you buy.

Decide before the week starts, from testing rather than banners.
